Practice 1

Read the dialogue with your tutor. Then, work together to analyze the student's responses. Try to understand the speaker’s purpose and find useful words or phrases you can use in your own answers. Finally, practice responding to the same questions with your tutor.

Examiner

Are you good at saving money?

Sarah

I try to be good at saving money. Every month, after I get my salary, I put some money into my savings account. I usually save about 20% of what I earn. This way, I can use the money in the future if I need it for travel or emergencies.

Examine the Response

  • Why is this a good response?

  • What's the main idea?

  • Key details: Find the who, what, where, when, why, or how in the response.

  • Which words or phrases can you use from these responses?

Examiner

What do you usually spend your money on?

Sarah

Most of my money goes to daily needs like food, transportation, and rent. On weekends, I sometimes spend money on eating out with friends at restaurants. I also like to buy small things online, like books or clothes. Sometimes I save up for a special trip once a year.

Examiner

Do you think young people are good with money?

Sarah

Some young people are good with money, but many still find it difficult. They often spend money quickly on things like new phones, clothes, or going out with friends. Many don’t have much experience with saving or planning. I think schools and parents can help them learn better money habits.

Practice 2

Read the dialogue with your tutor. Each sentence is missing either the main idea or a key detail. Use the dialogue to fill in the missing parts and complete the sentences.

Examiner

What is something you bought recently?

Sarah

Last week, I bought a new pair of running shoes.

For example, they can save 10% or 20% after they get paid. It’s also good to make a simple budget to see how much they spend. This way, they can avoid problems and feel safer about the future.
