Examiner

Why do you think learning English is useful?

Eric

Learning English is useful because it helps me talk to people from many countries. A lot of information, like books and websites, is in English. It’s also important for travel and finding a good job. English gives me more chances in life.

Examine the Response

  • Why is this a good response?

  • What's the main idea?

  • Key details: Find the who, what, where, when, why, or how in the response.

  • Which words or phrases can you use from these responses?

Examiner

What part of learning English is most difficult for you?

Eric

Speaking is the most difficult for me. Sometimes, I feel nervous and forget the words I want to say. Also, pronunciation can be hard because some sounds are different from my own language. But I keep practicing to get better.

Examiner

How do you practice speaking English outside of class?

Eric

I practice speaking by talking with my friends in English. I also try to watch English movies and repeat the sentences. Sometimes, I read out loud to improve my pronunciation. This helps me feel more confident when I speak.

Practice 2

Read the dialogue with your tutor. Each sentence is missing either the main idea or a key detail. Use the dialogue to fill in the missing parts and complete the sentences.

Examiner

How can learning a new language help people travel?

Eric

When you travel, knowing the local language makes everything easier.
