Read the dialogue with your tutor. Then, work together to analyze the student's responses. Try to understand the speaker’s purpose and find useful words or phrases you can use in your own answers. Finally, practice responding to the same questions with your tutor.

Examiner

What are the main environmental problems in your country?

Ryan

In my country, one big problem is air pollution. Many cars and factories put smoke into the air, which makes it hard to breathe sometimes. Water pollution is also a problem because some people throw trash into rivers and lakes. These problems hurt people’s health and nature.

Examine the Response

  • Why is this a good response?

  • What's the main idea?

  • Key details: Find the who, what, where, when, why, or how in the response.

  • Which words or phrases can you use from these responses?

Examiner

Would you like to live in the countryside or the city? Why?

Ryan

I would like to live in the countryside. It is quieter, and the air is cleaner than in the city. I like seeing trees, mountains, and animals because it helps me relax. Also, there is less noise and traffic, so life feels more peaceful there.

Examiner

How does nature help people relax?

Ryan

Nature helps people relax because they can do fun outdoor activities. For example, people can go hiking, fishing, or have a picnic with friends. These activities help people enjoy their free time and forget about work or school stress. Spending time outside makes people feel refreshed and happy.

Practice 2

Read the dialogue with your tutor. Each sentence is missing either the main idea or a key detail. Use the dialogue to fill in the missing parts and complete the sentences.

Examiner

What kind of home environment helps people feel happy?

Ryan

A happy home is clean, quiet, and full of warm love and support.
