Examiner

Can you describe something special about your culture?

One special thing about my culture is the food. In China, we eat many different dishes like noodles, dumplings, and steamed buns. Each area has its own special flavors and ways of cooking. Food is very important because it brings families together and shows our long history.

Examine the Response

  • Why is this a good response?

  • What's the main idea?

  • Key details: Find the who, what, where, when, why, or how in the response.

  • Which words or phrases can you use from these responses?

Examiner

Do you think it’s important for people to understand their culture?

Lee

Yes, I think it’s very important. When people understand their culture, they learn about their history, language, and values. In China, things like respect for parents and hard work are important parts of our culture. This helps people feel proud and keeps traditions strong.

Examiner

How can young people learn more about their culture?

Lee

Young people can learn more by talking to older family members and listening to their stories. They can also study Chinese art, music, or poems in school. Visiting museums or reading books about history is also helpful. These ways help young people understand their culture better.

Practice 2

Read the dialogue with your tutor. Each sentence is missing either the main idea or a key detail. Use the dialogue to fill in the missing parts and complete the sentences.

Examiner

One meaningful part of my culture is respect for elders.
